“Please Design and Build Us a World-Class Working Environment”
This West End based Hedge Fund presented us with an open plan “Cat A” office and requested a “world class working environment” to help launch them on the next stage of their expansion. The client was already working in the building when the opportunity arose to expand into a larger space. They seized their chance to double their footprint in this prized location. They stipulated that the design should be functional, productive and of high quality. It would also be used for meeting clients, so the design mustn’t seem opulent or frivolous.
Design and Fit-Out
Cat A means that the office space was equipped with suspended ceilings, raised floors and basic heat, light and HVAC infrastructure. From a design and fit-out perspective it was a blank canvas. DRCG had the responsibility to deliver all aspects of the brief. We provided a custom design solution covering space planning, trading technology, IT infrastructure, dealing desks and other furniture.
Having gained an understanding of our client’s working practices our designer interpreted the brief by emphasising the sense of spaciousness with clean, reflective finishes, a pale palette, glass partitioning and soft lighting accentuated by bespoke features in reception, the kitchen and breakout areas. An under-lit marble reception desk was surrounded by dark wooden panelling. Feature floor and wall coverings, feature lighting and bespoke furniture completed the reception area. The dealing room, individual offices, boardroom and meeting rooms were carefully planned to reduce noise and provide well-lit space while ensuring trading screens remained clearly legible.
A central feature of the main working area was an 8m x 2.5m slatted, wooden partition wall in front of the dealing room that had concealed fittings to give the impression of floating. This striking feature provided a solid barrier without blocking the light and was felt to be very much on brief. There was a fully-equipped kitchen, a breakout area and small meeting room featured blue and orange colour to contrast with the main working area. A sleek washroom was also fitted.
As capital markets specialists we provided consultancy on trader voice and data technology options and rolled out the full implementation in the dealing room and individual offices. We installed uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) for continuity purposes. The selection of our exclusive Wall Street Trading Desks and flat screen arms made the installation aspect of this work easier and facilitates the on-going work of the IT administrators.
